Michi-no-Eki (roadside rest area) Kawasaki, Ichinoseki City

道の駅「かわさき」一関市

The Michi-no-Eki (roadside rest area) Kawasaki is 200m east of Kitakami Ohashi Bridge on Highway 284. It has a farmers market selling produce as well as local specialties, and a restaurant with menu featuring local ingredients. Popular here is ramen made with noodles containing root of the hodoimo or groundnut, a member of the bean family, which is grown only in the Kawasaki district. Originally from North America where it has the name apios, it is only grown by a few farmers in the district but it is said to be high in calcium and fiber and helps to control high blood pressure and cholesterol. It is ground into flour, then added to dough to make noodles. There is also an information corner about tourism and products from the Higashi Iwai-gun district.
