柳之御所遺跡(平泉町)

This is thought to be the former location of the sprawling Hiraizumi-kan, the palace complex and administrative center of the Oshu Fujiwara clan’s government. An enormous quantity of archeological finds here have helped illuminate life in Heian-period Japan (794-1185), especially for that of the ruling class.

(Designated a national historic site by the Japanese government)
