It is said that the Old Nambu Stencil Dyeing was developed in 1628 by Sanemon, a dyer who worked for the Nambu clan. The dyed products were mostly used by the samurai. The production technique and the stencil designs originally came from China; the stencils from Sanemon’s days have been well preserved, and as a result, this traditional craft has continued to this day. There are three major steps in the production, all of which require handwork.
