Kamaishi Daikannon Statue

釜石大観音(釜石市)

This 48.5-m statue was built on the Kamasaki Peninsula in 1970, by Myohozan Shakuozenji Temple. The first thing you will see when you enter the statue is the impressively long escalator. You can then climb to the 11th floor, where there is an observatory; it is located inside the fish the statue is holding. There is also a worship hall with three Kannon statues, statues of Seven Gods of Good Fortune, and a stupa presented by a temple in Sri Lanka, in which a portion of Buddha’s remains is enshrined. A festival is held on the 1st Sunday of June, with a shishi-odori performance.
