Mt. Iwate

岩手山(八幡平市、雫石町、滝沢市)

Mt. Iwate ( 2,038 m ) is the highest mountain in Iwate and is one of Japan’s 100 Most Beautiful Mountains. It is often referred to as Nambu Katafuji, or “half-sided Mt. Fuji of the Nambu area,” because the gentle-sloping side of the mountain resembles Mt. Fuji. It is part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park. It is also known as Ganjusan or “Rock Eagle Mountain,” because in early spring, the snow on the mountain starts to melt and the mountain rocks become exposed, forming a silhouette that resembles an eagle. One of the best spots to see Mt. Iwate is from the Kaiunbashi Bridge in Morioka. Many local students climb Mt. Iwate for their school trip.
