Southern Iwate

The area has a well-balanced blend of industry and agriculture, and is dotted with numerous historic sites.
Remains and relics, including the World Heritage Site of Hiraizumi, tell us of the existence of a once flourishing culture.
The region is also known nationwide for its abundance of diverse cultural intangible assets, including but not limited to Hanamaki City, associated with Kenji Miyazawa who referred to Iwate as Ihatove, and Tono, a folktale village made famous from Tono monogatari (The Legends of Tono), as well as other cultural treasures involving folktales and traditional festivals.
Many onsen towns such as Hanamaki, Ichinoseki, and Nishiwaga can be found in the area.
A journey exploring these uniquely charming onsen is highly recommended.
