From JR Miyako Station north to Kuji Station, and from JR Kamaishi Station south to Sakari Station, this railway runs along the Pacific coast of Iwate Prefecture. While it runs through mountains for much of its length, between these sections the views are spectacular. On winter weekends and public holidays a Japanese-style carriage decorated in tatami serves the line, accentuating the relaxing travel on offer (December to March, between Miyako and Kuji. Confirm schedule in advance). Try the famous limited-edition “sea urchin bento box” at Kuji Station.
