Founded in 1904, this venerable establishment in Hanamaki, the place where wanko soba was invented, bustles with tourists as well as local regulars on their lunch break. This was the restaurant where wanko soba became nationally famous on account of its National Wanko Soba Tournament. Kajiya is a place to enjoy Hanamaki wanko soba without pomp or pretense.
At Kajiya, we are focused on hospitality and serving customers delicious soba to their heart’s content. That is to say, rather than a touristy “Eat as fast as you can” or “Eat as much as you can” performance, customers can eat fresh, hot wanko soba at a pace that suits them, while enjoying a conversation with the server or their companions. There is a distinct flavor of yesteryear as we use matchsticks to count the number of bowls consumed.
In addition to wanko soba, Kajiya has a wide-ranging menu using seasonal ingredients from different types of soba to set meals, eel, tapas and drinks.
