Tendaiji is said to be the oldest temple in Iwate. The white-faced Sedentary Image of Yakushi Nyorai ( Buddha of Medicine and Healing ) in the main hall is an impressive statue with a warm, motherly expression. However, the main image of the temple is not the Yakushi Nyorai statue, but the Wooden Standing Image of Shokannon in the treasure hall behind the temple.
