The Goshono Site is a large settlement site believed to be from the mid-Jomon period ( 14,500 B.C.~1,000 B.C ) . The name “Jomon” means “cord-patterned,” and is derived from the pottery design of this period.There are over 800 pit dwellings throughout this tableland of 75,000 m². Excavation began in 1989, and in 1993, the site was designated as a national historic site.
This site features a stone circle, as well as a central square and three settlements to the east, west, and at the center. In Goshono Jomon Park, mud-roofed pit dwellings and the stone circle have been reconstructed. Volunteer guides offer tours of the park ( Japanese only ) .
In 2009, the Goshono Site was included on the World Heritage Tentative List, as part of the “Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido, Northern Tohoku, and Other Regions.” Iwate, Aomori, Akita, and Hokkaido are working together towards inscription on the 2015 World Heritage List.
