The Hashino Iron Mining and Smelting Site refers to both the mining site for iron ore and the mine and steel making facility composed of remains of transportation roads and blast furnaces. This site located in the northwest part of Kamaishi City was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being a component site of “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.” This group of sites are related to the heavy industries of iron and steel, shipbuilding and coal mining that pioneered industrialization of Japan from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century.
