Ninohe is the top producer of lacquer in Iwate and is known for its Joboji-nuri lacquerware products. Tekiseisha is a store specializing in Joboji-nuri and other products made with Joboji’s lacquer; there is also a Joboji-nuri workshop, where you can watch the production process or try bowl-painting. But be careful if you have sensitive skin, because fresh lacquer often causes rashes. Today, the most popular style is simple and matte, without much decoration. Bowls are most commonly used for soups, but they can also be used for salads, pasta, ice cream, etc. The matte finish gains luster over time.
