Amber is fossilized tree resin from about 50 to 100 million years ago. The Kuji area is the only place in Japan where amber can be found. Kuji’s amber is from the age of dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous Period ( 80 to 90 million years ago ) . Some amber contains ancient insects or plants as inclusions; such amber is extremely rare and is of significant academic value. Over 1,000 pieces of amber with inclusions have been found in the Kuji area, many of which contain extinct or new species. These are extremely valuable, since there are very few insect fossils from this period.
