Tono Festival

日本のふるさと遠野まつり

This is a festival held on the 3rd weekend of September with such a great variety of local performing arts that you can hardly see all in a single day: a mikoshi ( portable shrine ) parade, kagura dances, Shishi-odori dances, Nambu-bayashi festival music, teodori ( hand dance ) , and more. About 50 groups parade through the city on the first day alone. You will be overwhelmed by the power and energy still thriving today in these traditional performances. Until 2008, Tono Festival was held on September 15, the same day as Tono Hachimangu Shrine Festival; at the latter, a dynamic Yabusame ( horseback archery ) performance can be seen. If these two festivals happen to be scheduled close to each other, you should definitely visit both.
