Every year in mid-August, the traditional outdoor Noh stage at Hakusan Shrine is lit for an evening performance of Noh theater, a classic Japanese style of performing arts. Located within the hilltop complex of Chuson-ji Temple, the historically faithful stage was once praised by renowned German architect Bruno Taut for “its simple yet refined structure.”
A torch lighting ceremony is performed to set the mood, before the performances begin at dusk. The ethereal music and movements, illuminated by firelight on a summer night, create a singular experience. The specific program changes yearly, but always features two Noh plays and a kyogen comedy. Some longtime fans have attended every summer for decades, relishing the authenticity of the performances on a traditional stage.
