This elegant poetry contest recreates a high court pastime from the Heian period (794-1185), where participants in period costumes are seated along the stream in Motsu-ji Temple’s garden, and must compose poems on a given theme before a cup of sake floated down the stream reaches their seat. Spectators can enjoy the colorful traditional costumes, graceful choreography, classical Japanese music and performing arts, and finally the reading of the poems and the naming of a victor.
