Fujiwara Festival

藤原まつり(平泉町)

Fujiwara Festival
Every spring and fall, Hiraizumi holds festivals that recall the golden age of historical Hiraizumi, when it flourished under the Oshu Fujiwara dynasty.

Spring Fujiwara Festival ( 5/1-5/5 )
After a memorial service in honor of the four Fujiwara lords, a variety of colorful events are held to commemorate Hiraizumi’s cultural history. The peak comes with the May 3 parade featuring popular historical figure Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers, a reenactment of Yoshitsune’s reception in Hiraizumi when the young hero fled the pursuit of his vengeful older brother, Yoritomo. Every year, guest actors are invited to play the part of Yoshitsune, and many fans attend to see their favorite stars.
Also part of the festivities are the Benkei Strongman Games, where contestants compete to see who can carry a whopping 160-kg rice cake the farthest, and the Ennen no Mai ritual dance, one of Japan’s oldest surviving performances of its kind.

Fall Fujiwara Festival ( 11/1-11/3 )
After a memorial service in honor of the four Fujiwara lords, the fall festival events take place over the next few days, and include a kimono-clad children’s parade, a noh play at Chuson-ji Temple’s traditional outdoor stage, and folk arts like kagura and shishi-odori dance performances, as well as the Ennen no Mai, all under the vibrant autumn colors of Hiraizumi’s fall foliage.
