Lake Gandoko; Smelt Fishing

岩洞湖ワカサギ釣り(盛岡市)

Lake Gandoko is located in Tamayama, the coldest place on Honshu Island. The smelt fishing season begins in early January and lasts through mid-March, when the ice thickens to more than 15 cm. You cut a small hole in the ice with a special drill; fishing equipment and tents can be rented, so even beginners can enjoy. You can usually catch anywhere from 20-350 fish, with some pros snatching up to 500. The best time to fish is from 6 to 9 in the morning. It is extremely cold, so make sure you wear warm clothes. For those who do not like cold weather, dome boats are available ( with a reservation; 2000 yen ) . To fish, you need a fishing ticket, which is available after 4 AM at the Gandoko Rest House and at various stores in Yabukawa, Tamayama. Smelts are delicious as tempura; if you have a meal at the Rest House, you can also have the fish you caught cooked there.
