During the Edo period, Mizusawa was part of the Sendai fief ruled by the Date clan. In Mizusawa, there was a building that was in effect a castle, but it was modestly called a “fortress mansion” since the main castle of the fief was located in Sendai. Nonetheless, Mizusawa developed as a castle town, with many samurai residences. None of the houses are very big, but they often have small groves of peach, plum, or chestnut trees which add color to their gardens. The Samurai Residence Museum is located in the former Uchida residence, which is the best preserved samurai residence in the Mizusawa area; you can learn the history of Mizusawa and the castle town structure, as well as the lifestyle of the townspeople.
