Beech forests retain water in the soil and are often referred to as the “green dam.” Beeches which have fallen after spreading their seeds become nutrients for other trees, and the spaces left by them allow the sunlight to shine through the forest upon the young seedlings. Secondary forests are forests which have regrown after a natural disaster or timber harvest. The Appi Heights are surrounded by beech forests with walking trails. A map of the walking trails is available. In 2009, wood chips were laid on the trails so that those on a wheelchair could enjoy the forest as well. There are facilities such as restrooms, faucets, and a parking lot at Buna no Eki. You can enter the forest from mid-May to early November.
