Ishiwarizakura

石割桜(盛岡市)

Ishiwarizakura is an approximately 380-year-old edohigan cherry tree, measuring 4.3 meters around the base and 10 meters in height. This magnificent tree, which is a national natural monument, has grown out of the crack in a large granite boulder; its dynamic appearance makes it one of the most beloved cherry trees in the city. Located in front of the Morioka Courthouse, it is one of the earliest cherry trees to come into bloom in the city, heralding the arrival of spring every year.

In 1932 there was a fire at the Courthouse, but Ishiwarizakura escaped damage thanks to the efforts of firefighters and, in particular, a gardener named Fujimura Jitaro, who risked his life to save the tree. Today, Jitaro’s family continues to take care of Ishiwarizakura as volunteer gardeners.
