Kappabuchi Pool

カッパ淵(遠野市)

Kappa are legendary creatures in Japanese folklore that live in rivers and ponds. They are said to be about the size of a human child. Though their body is shaped like that of a human, they have various animal-like features, such as that of a monkey, frog, turtle, and duck. They also have a unique plate on the head; when the plate dries up, they die. They are often described as mischievous, but sometimes they are seen as water gods.
