Kitayamazaki Cliffs is one of the most impressive landscapes of the Rikuchu Coast, where 200-meter cliffs stretch across 8 km of coastline. In 1999, it received the highest rating in the “natural resource: coast” category of National Tourist Resource Evaluation by the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation. Facilities include an observation deck and rest house.
There is also a 718-step esplanade from the observation deck at the top of the cliff to the shore. From the observation deck, you can see rare birds of prey such as falcons and ospreys through the telescope. From June to July, you can also enjoy the view of Rhododendron brachycarpum in bloom, designated as a prefectural natural monument. You may also see a thick fog over the sea, formed by a cold dry wind from the mountains called yamase. On a clear day, you can see Todogasaki Lighthouse, the easternmost point on Honshu Island.
