Tsukuehama Banyagun was selected as among the top 100 heritage fishing village sights of Japan for future preservation by the government. All of the banya huts were washed away by the tsunami of 2011, but 22 have been rebuilt on the site. Thirteen of the huts, which are the hub of fishermen’s daily activities, can be visited by the public. Other banya huts to visit include an “Eating hut” where local seafood is cooked, a “Saltmaking hut” where you can try making salt from seawater, and an “Ocean experience hut” well equipped for the use of beginner scuba divers.
